Five tips on prepping for a summer family session
Summer is creeping up pretty fast. School is almost out for the majority of students and the sun is getting warmer during the day and staying longer during the day. Family sessions in the summer can sometimes be rough for little ones but with these five tips to prep, your session will be smoother and you will be much happier.
I listed my top FIVE things to prep for a family summer session.
PREP THE KIDS: Pump the kids up for the session. Tell them how much fun they are going to have playing games and taking photos. If your summer session is later in the day, take a nap! Yes, everyone in the family if needed! Be rested and ready for the session and if this is a short nap in the day - why not? Fill their bellies! The whole, "we will get something to eat in a little bit" doesn't always work especially for little ones - so fill their bellies.
HYDRATE: I don't need to tell you that summer equals hot and muggy weather. Hot weather makes everything just a little more difficult especially when you are trying to take family photos. I always encourage parents to HYDRATE, HYDRATE and HYDRATE more. Lots of water before the session. Bathroom break right before you leave (or when you arrive depending on location) and everyone should feel good. Don't hesitate to bring a water bottle with, or small snacks, just nothing that takes a long time to eat and doesn't melt.
PLAN THE DAY: Nothing is worst than a lot of stress on the day of the session. The less stress is best so plan accordingly. Don't wait until the day of to plan outfits, don't schedule them right when you get off of work - little things like this can make you feel overwhelmed before you even get in front of the camera. So if you are taking a nap mid-day give yourself enough time to take your time to get ready - I hate being rushed.
BUG SPRAY: I have to admit I always forget bug spray for myself and clients. I am usually at a session, most likely later in the day in the summer and we are swarmed by bugs and even worse - mosquitoes. Sometimes it's just awful, I have certainly had to photoshop some bugs off of people's faces before. Not only are they just down right annoying in general but I personally don't want to go home with red welts all over. And while bug spray is needed, tick spray is too!
BE COMFORTABLE: I know I say this a lot but this is a major key in your family session. Being comfortable is truly the NUMBER ONE thing to be if anything else. Wear a flowy dress or in something you will be comfortable and cool in. Overheating is not fun when in front of a camera. Dress the kids appropriately as well, they want to be comfortable too.
*I do have a client closet available for clients. Mostly dresses available to borrow for any booked session. Sizes and styles varies. Ask about adding to the client closet discount.
