It had been years since I last hugged Dustin and Ellen, he kind of years that somehow fly in a blink, yet hold so much life in them. The last time I photographed them was on their wedding day in Montana, tucked into the hills at a friend’s home overlooking open land and endless sky. Their ceremony had the most incredible view, mountains layered in blues and greens, soft air drifting through pines, and Ellen holding one of the most stunning bouquets I’ve ever seen.
So when we met again, high at Lost Trail Pass near the ski resort, it felt like stepping right back into their story. If you’ve ever stood at the overlook that straddles the Idaho–Montana border, you know how unreal it is, wide sweeping valleys, pine tree tops stretching toward sky, and the kind of light that dances across the ridgeline. As a Hamilton Montana Photographer, I don’t get sessions up here as often as I’d love, but every time I do, it sweeps me off my feet. This evening with them was no different.
There is something special about photographing people you’ve known since their beginning as husband and wife. I’ve captured their wedding as a Montana Wedding Photographer, their first family session, and now this update years later. Watching their connection mature, the way they laugh, how naturally they fall into each other, is an absolute gift of this job.
Of course, their furry companion Wesson tagged along and naturally became the star of the show. Wesson has presence, personality, and the biggest, softest heart. It fits perfectly because Ellen pours hers into animals too. She volunteers with Great Pyrenees Rescue, Montana, dedicating her time to saving and advocating for dogs in need. Knowing this piece of her makes moments with Wesson even sweeter, these images show not just a pet, but a relationship built on love, responsibility, and intention.
As the wind brushed across the pass and the forest opened beneath us, I was reminded why I love being a Western Montana Photographer, these places, these people, these moments that mark time.
To Dustin and Ellen, thank you for trusting me yet again to tell a little piece of your story. And for choosing a location that rises right into the clouds. Here’s to dogs, mountains, and marriages that last through all the seasons.
