A Chilly Morning with the Provence Family
There’s something really special about photographing families you already feel connected to, and the Provence family is one of those for me. Hailey and Tyler recently made the move to Challis, which means they’re now a whole lot closer to family and that alone feels like a new chapter worth celebrating. We met up in Salmon for their session, just the three of them and their sweet boy, Easton, on a crisp morning that definitely reminded us winter was right around the corner.
This session felt extra meaningful because while this was my time photographing their little family, I’ve been lucky enough to photograph their family as a whole over the years. From sisters’ family sessions to weddings and other milestones, I’ve spent time behind the camera with many of the people closest to them. Getting to know families in that way, not just one moment, but across different branches and seasons, is something I truly cherish. It makes sessions feel familiar, comfortable, and full of genuine connection rather than something formal or rushed.
Hailey had been hoping for snow photos (and honestly, same), but Mother Nature had other plans that morning. No snowflakes yet, just cold air, rosy cheeks, and that quiet stillness you only get early in the day. And now, of course, we do have snow, which feels very on brand for Idaho timing. Even without the snow, the session was beautiful in its own way, soft light, cozy layers, and all the love this little family carries with them.
One thing I hear often from parents is concern about cold sessions with kids, especially little ones. And I get it. No one wants frozen fingers, grumpy moods, or tears halfway through. That’s exactly why my approach to chilly-weather sessions is simple: we move, we play, and we keep it fast. Kids don’t need to stand still for long periods, and honestly, the best photos almost always happen in between the posed moments anyway.
With Easton, we kept things light and moving, walking, snuggling, lifting him up, letting him explore a bit. Cold sessions aren’t about perfection; they’re about connection. When families are close together, laughing, warming each other up, those moments naturally shine through in the images. And the bonus? Sessions like this are efficient. We don’t linger, we don’t overdo it, and we still walk away with a full gallery of meaningful moments.
What I loved most about this session was seeing Hailey and Tyler in this season of life, settled, grounded, and clearly so grateful to be closer to family again. There’s a calm that comes with that kind of move, even in the midst of busy days and growing kids. Easton soaked up all the attention, and those little in-between glances and cuddles are the kind of memories I know they’ll treasure as he grows.
Even without the snow Hailey had hoped for, this session felt so true to them, simple, cozy, and full of love. And who knows, maybe snow photos are just an excuse to plan another session someday.
Provence family, thank you for trusting me to capture your memories, not just once, but across your family over the years. Being invited back again and again is something I never take for granted. Cold mornings, warm hearts, and memories that will last far beyond the season, those are always worth it.
