The Roar of the Valley: Salmon Valley Speedway

A Night at Salmon Valley Speedway

On a summer evening in Salmon, Idaho, the sound carries for miles.

Long before you see the race cars sliding through the corners or the dust hanging in the air, you hear it first, the unmistakable rumble of engines echoing across the valley. For many in Lemhi County, that sound signals more than just a race. It signals community, tradition, and a place where generations come together.

Recently, I grabbed my camera and headed to Salmon Valley Speedway to capture some of the action. Racing photography is one of those things that's completely different from what I normally do. It's fast, unpredictable and a little challenging, which is probably why I enjoy it so much.

What I may not have expected was spending the evening sitting in the flag stand talking to myself, singing to myself, and seeing how many Talladega Nights quotes I could remember. (The answer is apparently quite a few.)

Nestled at the Lemhi County Fairgrounds, Salmon Valley Speedway features both a 1/4-mile and 1/6-mile clay oval track, making it one of Idaho's most unique grassroots racing venues. The speedway proudly promotes itself as Idaho's only dual clay oval and attracts drivers and spectators from across Idaho, Montana and beyond.

But the speedway's story is one of perseverance.

Originally built in the early 1990s, the track became a local favorite, drawing crowds eager for Saturday night excitement. Over time, racing activity slowed, and for a while, the future of the speedway seemed uncertain. Many wondered if the familiar roar of engines would become nothing more than a memory.

Fueled by a shared passion for racing and community, local volunteers, businesses and supporters came together to breathe new life into the track. What emerged was more than a racetrack, it became a symbol of what small-town communities can accomplish when they rally around something they love.

And that's exactly what stood out to me.

The races aren't just about the cars. They're about the people.

Throughout the evening, families filled the grandstands, kids ran around excitedly waiting for the next race, and community groups sold food to raise money for local causes. Craig Larsen kept the crowd engaged all night long, not only announcing the races but making sure everyone was having a good time. From games and prizes for the kids to keeping the energy high between races, he helps make the experience entertaining for everyone.

Of course, the racing itself didn't disappoint.

The tow truck made several appearances throughout the night, which is usually a sign that things are getting interesting. At one point, I even managed to catch a car riding the barrier with my camera. There were plenty of close calls, plenty of dirt flying and plenty of moments that had the crowd watching closely.

One of my favorite parts, though, was simply watching the cars slide through the corners while the sun dipped behind the mountains. I don't know the proper racing terminology, but watching them drift around the track while dust hangs in the air makes for a pretty incredible backdrop.

Surrounded by mountain views and open skies, Salmon Valley Speedway offers something uniquely Salmon. It's exciting, affordable, family-friendly, and gives people something fun to do on a summer evening. Whether you're a lifelong racing fan or just looking for an excuse to get out of the house, it's easy to see why people keep coming back.

As the sun sets behind the mountains and the green flag waves, the speedway comes alive. Engines roar, fans lean forward in anticipation, and another chapter begins in the story of Salmon Valley Speedway.

And if you happen to spot a photographer in the stands quietly reciting Talladega Nights quotes while trying to track race cars through a camera lens, it may be me.
