Some wedding days are memorable because of the details. Others stand out because of the experience. Ben and Sierra’s wedding in 2024 was one of those days that combined both, heartfelt moments, a meaningful location, and yes, horses.
I had the honor of photographing Ben and Sierra’s wedding in 2024, and later we met again at their ranch in Carmen, Idaho for a couples session that felt perfectly them. We met at their home so we could incorporate one of their horses into their wedding portraits. something that was incredibly personal and meaningful to their story.
Let’s talk about the real stars of the show for a moment. Horses.
If you know, you know.
I always joke that horses are worse than children and dogs combined. Kids eventually listen (sometimes). Dogs are usually bribable. Horses? They either absolutely love what’s happening or they want nothing to do with it. There is no in-between. And honestly? I love it either way. It keeps things interesting, unpredictable, and real, which usually makes for the best photos.
Ben and Sierra braved not only the cold, but also the wind for this sweet couples session. Despite the chill, they kept things light and fun, which made the entire experience feel effortless. That’s always my goal, not stiff posing, not forced moments, just space for couples to be themselves while I guide when needed.
One of the perks of meeting at their ranch was flexibility. Sierra was able to change outfits, making the session feel even more personal and relaxed. She also borrowed jewelry from one of her favorite makers, Lacey French, owner of Crazy Hoof Silver, which added a beautiful, meaningful detail to her look. Those small touches often end up being the things couples love most when they look back at their photos.
I brought along a bundle of red roses to add a little Valentine’s-inspired flair to the session. Against the winter landscape and ranch setting, the pop of red was the perfect contrast, romantic, bold, and timeless.
Sessions like this are a reminder of why I love what I do. Wedding photography isn’t just about the ceremony day itself. It’s about capturing the layers of a couple’s life, their home, their animals, their personalities, and the things that matter most to them.
Ben and Sierra’s ranch portraits weren’t just beautiful; they were them. Wind, cold, horses and all.
