Lake Como Montana Elopement Magic: Nate + Joe’l’s Rainy Day “I Do” in the Mountains
“Let’s go to Montana and get married.”
That’s exactly what Nate and Joe’l did.
At sixteen, Joe’l told everyone she was going to marry that guy in Montana. Nate was her first love, the kind that never really goes away. Life took them in different directions for more than twenty years, but somehow, love had its way of circling back. Now, living on the East Coast, they decided to take a spontaneous trip to Montana, and in true “meant to be” fashion, they chose to elope while they were there.
Their Montana elopement was the kind of story that feels pulled straight from a movie. The couple planned a scenic road trip across the state, flying in and driving over 1,480 miles between the Idaho border, Glacier, and Yellowstone. Wide-open skies, golden fall colors, and mountain peaks framed every mile of their journey. Somewhere in between, surrounded by the quiet beauty of western Montana, they said “I do.”
Nate’s parents and sister live in the Ravalli area, which made everything fall into place perfectly. His sister even officiated the ceremony, making it deeply personal and full of meaning. The trip itself started with delays, a late flight and gray skies threatened to dampen the mood, but nothing could ruin the spirit of this day. I packed ponchos and an umbrella just in case (you never know with Montana weather!), and somehow, the rain stopped thirty minutes before the ceremony. The clouds broke just enough to give us soft light and the perfect misty backdrop that only Montana can deliver.
Joe’l looked absolutely stunning, glowing, peaceful, and ready to marry the man she’d loved for decades. The small group of family members stood quietly as they exchanged vows. It was intimate. Simple. And absolutely beautiful.
As a Montana Wedding Photographer, I’ve learned that there’s something incredibly special about elopements. There’s no rush, no strict schedule, no audience, just two people choosing each other completely. You get to breathe, laugh, and be fully present. The rain, the quiet, the mountain air, it all becomes part of the story.
There’s no “right way” to have a wedding. Whether you’re surrounded by hundreds of guests or just the two of you on a mountaintop in Montana, it’s your day. And that’s what makes it perfect.
Fall in Montana has its own kind of magic, the colors, the crisp air, the sense of peace that fills every valley. For Nate and Joe’l, it was everything they wanted and more: an unforgettable beginning to a lifelong adventure together.
