One of my favorite parts about being an Idaho Senior Photographer is getting to meet such amazing young people who are stepping into their futures with excitement and heart. Recently, I had the honor of photographing Matt, a senior at Sentinel High School in Missoula.
Matt has a deep connection to Williams Lake, where his family has a cabin tucked into the hillside. This place has been his summer escape for years, filled with hikes, swims, and peaceful evenings overlooking the water. So when it came time to choose a location for his senior photos, Williams Lake was the obvious choice. And honestly? I can’t imagine a better backdrop to tell his story.
What makes senior photography so special is capturing not just a face, but a personality, a season of life, and the passions that make someone unique. Matt is adventurous, kind, and outgoing, but what really stood out to me during his session was his love for music. He plays the viola, and during his session, I was lucky enough to listen as he played. Standing by the water and hearing those notes echo across the lake was a front-row seat I’ll never forget.
Matt told me he’d never had professional photos taken with his viola, and it meant so much to be able to give him those memories. Senior photos are about celebrating accomplishments and passions, whether that’s a sport, a hobby, or, in Matt’s case, music. His viola became more than a prop; it was part of the story we captured.
We took photos all around the lake, the dock, the mountain, even among small boulder fields that made the perfect backdrop. His dog, Charlie, made an appearance (always a win in my book!), and of course, we had some fun with his cap and gown. Each moment with Matt and his mom, Kelsey, was full of laughter and warmth.
Sessions like this remind me why I love what I do. Senior photography, whether in Missoula, Salmon, or tucked away at a mountain lake, is about honoring these once-in-a-lifetime milestones. Matt, thank you for sharing your music, your smile, and your story with me. I know your future will be every bit as bright and meaningful as the notes you play.
